\u00ab\u00a0C\u00e9cile Muhire\u2019s Cherubino is lovely and comic, and I loved the mix of spunk and fear Cherubino demonstrates as he faces the rage of his soon to be ex-boss. Ms. Muhire does a good job in making Cherubino human, showing both why Cherubino is an idiot but also why he\u2019s loved. He\u2019s a goof, but he\u2019s totally unaware of just how plain silly he is, and that makes him sweet. And he is totally dedicated to his very imaginary loves. He doesn\u2019t love all women, he loves being in love. When Figaro sings to him about the glories of war, you can watch Ms. Muhire\u2019s Cherubino becoming caught up with the idea\u2014though he would desert his post in a second if he\u2019d ever gotten to the battlefield.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00ab\u00a0A pair of comic characters almost stole the show. Soprano Cecile Muhire did a lovely job as Cherubino, an adolescent Puck intent on copulating with any female in sight. Managing a little backwards somersault upon entering, Muhire gave a fine rendition of<\/span>
\n  Non so piu cosa son<\/em>, in which the character details his randy aspirations. Overall, hers was a fine, fully realized performance \u2014 charming and highly physical.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The duo, usually characterized as dupes who fall easily for Don Giovanni\u2019s wiles, were instead depicted as nuanced, believable – albeit flawed – characters. Monaghan was a comic genius from start to finish with a lush, full voice that soared through the hall. Muhire was lovable and seductive, urging Masetto to trust her with a light, agile soprano.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

This song exemplifies Mozart\u2019s exemplary skill in making the music mirror the words. As Zerlina succumbs to Don Giovanni\u2019s seduction, the pair fall into parallel rhythms like waves lapping in perfect tandem. And then they collapse to the stage in a lascivious embrace.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
